We extend our congratulations to Dr Natasha Hendrick [AM] and alumna of Homeward Bound [Team HB6] who was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to youth, and earth sciences as part of the Australia Day honours last month. The order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement.
Reflecting on this achievement, Natasha expresses, “I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive this acknowledgment for the volunteer roles I have undertaken over many years. I firmly believe that you get out of life, what you’re prepared to put into it. I have grown so much and found great joy in the roles I’ve held.”

Natasha has volunteered her time to facilitate national and international leadership programs for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts and Women Who Code. She is also a dedicated mentor to young women in STEMM, advocating that if opportunities to build your leadership capabilities are difficult within the confines of the workplace, seeking leadership roles outside of your profession is a viable alternative.
“In my own career journey, I’ve embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. Every volunteer role I undertook, served as a platform to enhance my leadership and management capabilities.”
Natasha emphasises that it then becomes less challenging to doubt your abilities. Practising the necessary leadership and management skills in other organisations has helped propel her professional career in a traditional male-dominated industry.
As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, 2024, let us take a moment to recognise and celebrate the achievements of remarkable individuals like Natasha, who is passionate about helping women in STEMM navigate a digital future where human leadership competencies are needed more than ever.
