At 56 years old, Salma Hayek looks decades younger. And surprisingly, she has a simple and mostly natural skincare routine that helps her skin preserve its youthful glow. But although uncomplicated, some of her tricks might be unconventional, like not washing her face in the morning.
She thinks washing her face in the morning is unnecessary.
Hayek prefers to take her grandmother’s advice, and ditch face cleansers in the morning. “My grandmother taught me to never wash my face in the morning,” she said in an interview.
According to Hayek and her grandma, “What happens at night is your skin produces all the oils that your skin needs to look youthful. It regenerates.” So washing off all those hydrating oils makes no sense, and maybe this is the secret behind the actress’s youthful glow as well.
But cleansing at night is very important.
On the other hand, thoroughly washing her face in the evening is an important part of Salma Hayek’s routine. “So, wash your skin really great at night but don’t wash the hard work off your skin in the morning,” she urges her fans.
She eats a nutritious diet but doesn’t like to restrict herself.
Maybe another reason why Hayek is so youthful-looking in her 50s is due to the food that she eats. The actress prefers to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and organic products. She also usually ditches sugary products, opting for a refreshing fruit juice instead. This doesn’t mean that she doesn’t indulge in the occasional cheat meal, as she describes herself as an “emotional eater.”
She constantly adapts her skincare routine to how her skin feels each day.
“My routine changes, it depends on how my skin wakes up. I don’t do it like a machine. I look at it, I pay attention. I talk to it. Like, ’What do we need today?’” Hayek explained.
Unlike many people who have a list of products they use every morning and every night, Hayek prefers to experiment with what her skin needs and has a more intuitive routine.
She usually prefers simpler products, but often turns to a special Mexican ingredient.
Most of her skincare favorites include affordable products, that might not promise miracles, but they’re always very trustworthy. Rose water is one of Salma Hayek’s go-to products, as it’s gentle and natural, and “wakes the skin up,” according to the famous actress.
Moisturizer is also a very important part of her morning routine. She uses a special Mexican ingredient called Tepezcohuite, that is usually used by burn victims because it regenerates the skin. “This is why I have no Botox, no peels, no fillers,” Hayek explained.
At night, Hayek uses coconut oil as a natural makeup remover and follows with rose water to take off the residue. She uses a warm towel for this to do “a little steam.”
She sometimes follows this with an exfoliating mask, like a simple one made of oatmeal and honey. However, Hayek stresses the dangers of over-exfoliating, so this step is not part of her daily routine. Most days, she finishes the evening with a mix of oils based on what her skin needs at the time.
