Clinica de Familia La Romana

Situated in the Dominican Republic, Clinica de Familia La Romana has carved out a vital space in supporting individuals living with HIV, offering comprehensive care and a sense of hope for a healthier future.

This dedicated clinic started as a program to help prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. However, its vision soon expanded, recognizing the broader needs of the community. Today, Clinica de Familia La Romana offers a comprehensive approach encompassing:

  • Free HIV testing: Identifying individuals living with HIV is crucial for early intervention and treatment.
  • Effective treatment: The clinic provides access to antiretroviral therapy, significantly improving the health and well-being of patients while reducing the risk of transmission.
  • Psychosocial support: Recognizing the emotional and social challenges associated with HIV, the clinic provides counseling and other support services to help patients navigate their circumstances.

Making a Difference

Heart to Heart International has played an important role in supporting Clinica de Familia La Romana’s mission by facilitating access to essential medication like Abacavir through our partner Cross Catholic. This crucial medication (when used in combination with other medications) plays a key role in suppressing the virus and improving patient outcomes.

Thanks to the donation of this medicine by HHI, thousands of individuals across the nation with HIV-1 infection can have access to a treatment and prevent HIV from multiplying in their body. These medicines are essential in the Dominican Republic. They allow people with HIV to have hope and live more fulfilling lives.”

Looking to the future

Clinica de Familia La Romana wants to expand their reach. They plan to extend their services to even more under-resourced communities, particularly in rural areas and bateyes (sugarcane plantation communities). This expansion will ensure that individuals in these areas have equal access to crucial testing, treatment, and support.
